Aim- To demonstrate the process of sublimation in ammonium chloride.

Materials required- Glass funnel, china dish, ammonium chloride, cotton, burner, tripod stand.

Procedure-
1. Take some ammonium chloride, crush it and put in a china dish.
2. put an inverted glass funnel over the china dish.
3. put a cotton plug on the stem of the funnel.
4. Now, slowly heat china dish and observe.

Observation-Ammonium chloride does not melt on heating. it is directly converted into gaseous state and gets deposited on the inner cooler walls of the funnel as a crystalline solid

Conclusion-Ammonium chloride thus sublimes on heating.

hope it helpss.....

The dish is heated from below.

The dish is covered by a perforated sheet. A glass funnel in the inverted position is placed over the dish so as to cover it. The steam of the funnel is plugged with cotton. The dish is heated from below. As a result, amonium chloride undergoes sublimation i.e :- it changes into vapours which pass through the holes or perforations of the perforated sheet. The vapours get cooled in the upper portion of the funnel and change to the solid form. The latter gets deposited on the inner walls of the funnel and can be suitably removed later on. The cotton plug does not allow any vapours of the Substance to escape.
