Heya!
To study the expansion of water on heating
Fill a test tube with coloured water. Pass a narrow glass tube through a one-holed rubber stopper.
Fix the stopper tightly into the mouth of the test tube so that the coloured water rises by 1 or 2 cm in the glass tube. Mark the level of water in the glass tube.
Heat the test tube for 2-3 minutes and note the water level in the glass tube. Has it changed? Now cool the test tube to room temperature.
Observations and Conclusions
Does the liquid come back to the mark again?
You will notice that, on heating, the water level rises above the mark, showing that the water expanded. On cooling, the water returns to the previous level.
This shows that liquids expand on heating and contract on cooling.
Hope this helps you... : )
