(i) Industrial preparation : On an industrial scale hydrochloric acid gas is manufactured by the reaction of hydrogen gas with chlorine gas under suitable conditions. The hydrogen chloride gas is than dissolve in water to give commercially packed hydrochloric acid of a particular strength.

This is combination reaction

H2 + Cl2 ---> 2HCl

(ii) Electrolytic process : When a reaction takes place by passing electric current, it is electrolytic process or electrolysis. Water breaks up into hydrogen and Oxygen gas on passing electric current.

H2o -----> H2 + O2
