Answer:

Shakespeare's intention was not to make Shylock a tragic figure; instead, Shylock was meant to function as a man who could be vividly realized as the epitome of selfishness; he must be defeated in this romantic comedy. In a sense, it is Shakespeare's own brilliance which led him to create Shylock as almost too human.

Answer: Shylock is a normal human being as seen in some scenes of the play. He is a loving father who trusted her daughter Jessica though, he was betrayed by her. He also loved his wife Leah as it is seen when he mourns over the loss of the turquoise ring given by his wife. He is a good friend to Tubal. He behaves well with those who treat him well. Just like other men, he also starves to take revenge from Antonio who ill treated him.

Explanation: Shylock is seen as one who grabs our sympathy. He was not provided justice in the court. Moreover, he was forced to change his religious faith. Thus, it is seen that his character was selfish and cruel because he had been treated unfairly.
