Mercury is used in thermometers because it is the only metal in liquid state at room temperature and has high coefficient of expansion and because of that a slightest variation seen in temperature is marked by the thermometer. It also has a high boiling point..

1)high boiling point so gives accurate reading
2)does not stick to glass tube and hence does not wet the glass tube
3)it is shiny so easy reading can be obtained
