If food particles remain trapped in between the teeth. Tiny creatures called microbes feed on plaque.
These microbes that live in our mouth produce acids as waste.
The acids attack the enamel, slowly making a hole that leaves the inner parts of the tooth exposed. So, with a hole in the protective layer, the tooth becomes open to further infection in the pulp.
This can be very painful. Black spots may appear on the tooth, indicating decay of the tooth. These are called dental caries or cavities.
We must keep our mouth clean, and eat foods that will make our teeth stronger.
