Question:

A convex mirror used for rear view on an automobile has a radius of curvature of 3.00m. If the bus is located at 5.00m from this mirror. Find the position , nature and size of the image.

Answer:

Image is 1.15 m back from the mirror.

Nature = Virtual , erect

Size = Smaller than the mirror.

Explanation:

Given :

  • Radius of Curvature = R = 3m

  • Object distance (u) = -5 (negative sign indicates that the image is is formex in opposite of the object.

To Find :

  • Image distance = ?

  • Height

  • Nature

Procedure :

f =  \frac{r}{2}

 \implies \: f =  \frac{ + 3}{2} m

 \implies \: f =  + 1.50m

 \implies \:  \dfrac{1}{v}  +  \dfrac{1}{u}  =  \dfrac{1}{f}

 \implies \:  \dfrac{1}{v}  -  \dfrac{1}{ - 5}  =  \dfrac{1}{1.5}

 \implies \:  \dfrac{1}{v}  =  \dfrac{10}{15}  +  \dfrac{1}{5}

 \implies \:  \dfrac{1}{v}  =  \dfrac{10 + 3}{15}

 \implies \: \dfrac{1}{v}   =  \dfrac{13}{15}

 \implies \: v = 1.15

Hence object is 1.15 m back from original object

Finding Magnification

m =  \dfrac{ - v}{u}

 \implies \: m =  \dfrac{ + 1.15}{ + 5}

 \implies \: m = 0.23m

➡ Hence , It is smaller than original object

➡ It is virtual and erect ✏
