Many species of plants and animals are endangered in our country. To protect the flora and fauna of the country, the government has taken the following steps:
a. Fourteen biosphere reserves have been set up by the government to protect the flora and fauna. Biosphere reserves are the areas of terrestrial and coastal ecosystems which promote the conservation of plants and wild life. Four biosphere reserves, the Sundarbans (West Bengal), Nanda Devi (Uttarakhand), the Gulf of Mannar (Tamil Nadu) and Nilgiris (Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu) are notable.
b. Many botanical gardens have also been set up, and financial and technical assistance is granted to them.
c. Many developmental programmes such as Project Rhino, Project Tiger etc. have been introduced.
