Answer:

The National Redemption Council (NRC) was the ruling Ghana military government from 13 January 1972 to 9 October 1975. Its chairman was Colonel I. K. Acheampong, who was thus also the head of state of Ghana.

Duration of rule Edit

The NRC came into power through a bloodless coup d'état, led by Acheampong, which overthrew the democratically-elected Progress Party (PP) government of Dr. K. A. Busia, taking place while Dr. Busia was in the United Kingdom for medical reasons. The constitution was suspended and all political parties banned. One of the main grievances leading to the coup had been the currency devaluations undertaken under the PP regime.

On 9 October 1975, the NRC was replaced by the Supreme Military Council. Its composition consisted of Acheampong, the chairman, who was also promoted straight from Colonel to General. The others included the military hierarchy consisting of Lt. Gen. Akuffo the Chief of Defence Staff, and the army, navy, air force and Border Guards commanders respectively. Some officers were promoted, some changed portfolios and many others were dropped.

On 13th January, 1972, the "military seized control" of the govt for the 2nd time under the "leadership" of "Lieutenant Colonel IK Acheampong". The army justified its action by accusing the civilian govt, headed by Kofi Busia, of having "failed to resolve" the different problems "confronting the Ghanaian armed forces".

Explanation:

  • In its initial years, the NRC earned public interest pleased with the removal of the austerity policies in Busia. The Ghana currency has been re-evaluated and two moves have been declared to reduce the strain of current foreign debt: repudiating Nkrumah's US$ 90 million in debt to UK companies and effectively rescheduling the remainder of Nkrumah 's loans for a period of 50 years. Instead all big foreign companies were nationalized by the NRC
  • The influence of Acheampong began in 1974 with the govt's successful settlement & reprocessing of Ghana 's debt in "foreign loan agreements". This also offered price protection for imports of basic food, while trying to foster the sovereignty of Ghanaians in agriculture and raw material production. All Ghanaians were "encouraged" to "pursue" some form of "food production" through the Operation Feed Yourself program to enable them to eventually achieve "food self-sufficiency" in the country..
