the following 3 reasons why they are said to be inert are:

  • because they unstable to form compounds [i.e they do not react with any metal]
  • because of having complete octate they are stable so it will be difficult loose or gain electron.
  • ionisation enthalpy is very high.
  • they do not have unpaired electron.

but afterwards it was found to be wrong .as Xe may form compound with flourine and oxides.
