The enclosures were beneficial to the rich peasants in Britain. They were seen as necessary to make long-term investments on land and plan crop rotations to improve the soil. Enclosures also allowed the richer landowners to expand the land under their control and produce more for the market thus earning profits.

The following were the impacts on the poor after the advent of the enclosure system:

They were denied access to firewood as land became the exclusive property of one landowner.

They could not graze their cattle on the commons, hunt small animals or collect apples and berries.

They were displaced from areas where enclosure happened on a large scale.

They had to migrate to different places in search of work and the jobs they found were not secure.

The wages received by agricultural labourers came down as landowners tried to increase profits.
