A parasite may be endoparasite or ectoparasite. A parasite deriving its nutrition from outside the host body is called an ectoparasite.EX: leach, lice. While a parasite deriving its nutrition from inside the host body is called an endoparasite. EX:tapeworm.

A saprophyte is an organism that obtains its nutrition from dead and decaying organic matter. It releases certain secretions which convert rotten and decaying matter into soluble forms which are then absorbed by saprophyte's body. EX:fungi and mushroom.
