Two examples for solvents other than water are : METHANOL(CH3OH) and ETHANOL(C2H5OH) 
The lower alcohol such as METHANOL(CH3OH) and ETHANOL(C2H5OH) are soluble in water in all proportions.

METHANOL :1.It is a colourless, sweet smelling liquid.
2.It is used as a solvent for paints, varnishes, gums oils and fats etc.

3. It is used in the manufacture of perfumes ,vanishes, dyes and drugs.
4. It is used as an anti freezing agent in automobile radiators.

ETHANOL :
1.It is lighter than water.
2. It is used in the manufacture of alcoholic beverages like beer, rum, whisky ,brandy etc.
3. It is used in the manufacture of transparent glycerine soap ,dyes and cosmetics.
4. It is used as a solvent for paints, varnishes, gum, resins,cosmetics, perfumes oils and fats.
