Biodegradable Substances :

  • The substances which can be disposed of naturally by the action of microorganisms like bacteria ,fungi etc are called biodegradable substances.

  • This organism secrete enzyme which causes breakdown of biodegradable substances into simple forms .

  • Biodegradable waste can also be put to treatment by waste management plants .

  • They can be used as manure compost to increase soil fertility
  • Example - garbage, sewage ,livestock waste , used tea leaves, waste papers, leftover food articles etc.

Effects of biodegradable substances :

They act as pollutants only when their quantity becomes large .

  • Decomposition of biodegradable waste lead to foul smell .

  • Dumping of Industrial waste reduces the fertility of the soil and leads to reduction in crop yields.

  • Breeding of flies in use quantity of these waste carries germs and spread diseases .

  • Dumping of waste into water bodies leads to water pollution. This results in spread of various water borne diseases .

Non Biodegradable substances :

  • The substances that can't be covered into harmless simpler forms by action of microorganisms are called non-biodegradable substances.

  • These are toxic , harmful maybe in earth and accumulate in the environment .

  • This account of the major pollutants of the environment.

  • Most non biodegradable waste result from human activities
  • Example - radioactive waste, plastic, insecticides, heavy metals such as lead, arsenic, aluminium etc .

Effects of Non Biodegradable substances:

  • Substances like radioactive waste lead Mercury it is accumulated in the environment and causes life threatening diseases in humans and other living beings

  • They pollute water and harm the aquatic plants and animals .
