Newton's first law of motion states that “An object at rest stays at rest, an object in motion stays in motion with same speed and direction unless acted by a force”. Some of the applications of this law are :

(i) Consider the use of seat belts in a car. ... So seat belts provide a balanced force to make us stable.

(ii) Wearing a seat belt in a car while driving is an example of Newton's 1st law of motion. If an accident occurs, or if brakes are applied to the car suddenly, the body will tend to continue its inertia and move forward, probably proving fatal.

(ii) When the bus or train accelerates, we tend to 'fall backward'. This is because we resist the change by falling back thus maintaining the law of inertia.
