During the reaction of the components metal oxide and calcium carbonate ,there is exchange of anions .Taking for example magnesium oxide the equation will look as follows;
CaCO3 + MgO => CaO +MgCO3
This reveals the the carbonate ions in calcium combine with magnesium pins leading to formation of magnesium cabornate and vise versa
