As you know the chemical formula of ammonia is NH3. The valence electron is Nitrogen is 5, so N requires 3 more electron to complete its octet. Here Hydrogen does that work, that is why there are 3 hydrogen atoms attached to N. since Nitrogen has left 2 free electron in its valence shell, it can use them to reduce other compounds, that is donating these electron to some other compound.
Hope it helps you!!
