We conducting research on whether intensive rotational grazing can increase soil organic carbon and nitrogen content in local ultisols. One thing we have noticed is that the same SOC content can result in red, red-brown, or black soils. So, it doesn't appear to be a SOC threshold that causes the soil to be black. SOC contents in our soils are quite low (typically less than 4% in the upper 2 cm) and rapidly decline in the upper 10 cm.
