A conventional symbol is a symbol that is widely accepted interpretation. Conventional signs are symbols used on maps to represent different features. The various features shown on a map are represented by conventional signs or symbols. For example, colors can be used to indicate a classification of roads. The symbols are explained in the key of the map. They can be in the form of alphabets, figures, signs or colour wash. The Survey Of India ( SOI) have standardised a set of conventional signs and symbols to be used in topographical maps. Conventional symbols means using different colours, signs and symbols to present any information such as mountains, rivers, peaks, bridges, forts, airports, dams, roads etc on the map.
