On heating it loses the seven molecules of water of crystallisation and forms anhydrous ferrous sulphate, which is greenish white in colour. When anhydrous ferrous sulphate is further heated, it decomposes to give sulphur dioxide, sulphur trioxide and ferric oxide (Fe2O3), which is reddish brown in colour.
