Add aqueous sodium hydroxide to the solid, or solution, under test and warm the mixture. Result: If ammonium ions are present then a pungent-smelling gas is produced. The gas produced turns damp red litmus paper blue. It is ammonia, NH3

Experiment :


Aim : To identify ammonia .


Materials :

  • beaker containing HCl .
  • a glass rod .

Procedure.

  • Dip the glass rod in HCl .
  • Bring the glass rod near ammonia.

Observation :


  • If you see that the glass rod shows dense white fumes , then it is ammonia .
  • This way we can test the ammonia.

Conclusion

Thus we learnt the test for ammonia.


Reaction :


NH₃ + HCl =====> NH₄Cl
