The following two Reactions are used to convert propane nitrile to Ethanamine:- H₂O/H⁺ and Br₂/KOH

• Propane nitrile on reacting with H₂O/H⁺ gives propanamide by nucleophilic addition.

• H₃O⁺ acts as a nucleophile and attacks the electronegative nitrile group leading to the formation of the amide group.

• Propanamide is converted to Ethanamine by reaction with Br₂/KOH - Hoffmann Reagent. This is called the Hoffmann reaction.
