Answer:
The predominant tone of the poem is one of flattery and deception. This poem tells the story of a cunning spider who entices a little fly with his tricky words to fall into his trap. This fable depicts a very prominent and common folly of human beings- the flaw of being easily convinced by false flattery.

The poem - ‘The Spider & The Fly by Mary Howitt’, mostly focuses on the topic of flattery. In this poem there is a spider who wants to eat a fly. The spider offers the fly all kinds of proposals such as - you can sleep in my bed, you can take a look in my pantry and eat whatever you like, dine with me and take a visit in my den. But the fly rejects all of these proposals because she had heard from other insects that all those who go in the spider’s house never come back. Keeping all this in mind, the fly bids good night to the spider and goes home. The spider also returns to his den. The next morning, the spider offers the fly one last thing - take a look at your beautiful face through my looking glass. The fly resists herself and rejects this offer. But the spider knew that she would come back because he had used flattery. He prepared his home, set the table and went to sleep. After a few hours, the fly came to the spider’s den climbing the spiral staircase. Just as the fly entered, the spider gobbled her up.
