As rivers flow down to the sea, they carry with them soil, sand, clay and pieces of rock. These heavy material sink to the bottom of the sea and forms layer there. These materials called sediment. Each year more and more layers pile up, one on the top of the other. Over thousands of years, the weight of the top layer pressing downwards, hardens the lower layers and they turn into rocks. This type of rock is called sedimentary rock. It is usually formed under the water in seas and lakes.
