West Bengal, Orissa, Kerala, Assam, Bihar, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana are some regions in India which come under the category of flood prone region.  

The main causes of floods in India are as follows:

• Heavy and continuous rainfall for a longer period of time.

• Reduction in the water holding capacity of the sea beds.

• Landslides in the northern part of the country causing the blockage of flow of rivers.
