Carbon is most commonly obtained from coal deposits, although it usually must be processed into a form suitable for commercial use. Three naturally occurring allotropes of carbon are known to exist: amorphous, graphite and diamond.

Carbon appears in 3 main forms in nature:

$ Diamond: It is the most famous allotrope of carbon. It is the hardest known substance ever found. The reason it is hard is because 1 carbon atom is attached to 4 carbon atoms. It is an insulator of electricity and shiny in appearance. The structure of Carbon is a 3D-networked structure. They are used for cutting glass and jewelry.

$ Graphite: It is the most commonly found allotrope of carbon. It is not as strong as diamond but conducts electricity. It does so because 1 Carbon atom is attached to 3 Carbon atoms and the 4th free electron conducts electricity. It is a 2D- Layer structure. They are used as lubricants, pencil leads etc.

$ C-60 Buckminster Fullerene: This is a recently found carbon allotrope (1985)  that was named after the American architect Buckminster Fuller because of his design of the geodesic dome. It is a 60 carbon atom that is in the shape of a football where the atomic bonds form pentagons and hexagons just like in a football. Its uses are limited to drug delivery systems in the body, catalysts etc.
