Oxides of Nitrogen. ... Collectively the oxides of nitrogen are known as NOx. The oxides of nitrogen can behave as the primary pollutant by producing toxic reaction themselves or they can act as secondary pollutants and combine with other pollutants to form acid rain, photochemical smog, aerosols.

Different oxides of nitrogen and sulphur:
Nitrogen and Sulphur oxides are very toxic in general purposes for mankind. They are either produced as a result of burning products that contain these elements, or as a chemical reaction or due to natural causes like acid rain, volcanos, etc.
Nitrogen being a group 15 element, has 5 outermost electrons. Sulphur has 6 electrons.
Nitrogen forms a lot of oxides namely –
- Nitrous oxide
- Nitric oxide
- Nitrogen dioxide
- Dinitrogen tetroxide
- Nitrogen pentoxide
Sulphur also forms a lot of oxides like –
- Sulphur monoxide
- Sulphur dioxide
- Sulphur trioxide
- Sulphur Sesquioxide
- Sulphur heptoxide
- Sulphur tetroxide
