Soap - A cleansing agent made from the salts of vegetables or animal fats.

Detergent- A cleansing agent that differs from soap but can also emulsify oils and hold dirt in suspension.

Soaps 1. Soaps are the sodium salts of long chain carboxylic acids 2. The ionic geoup in soaps is -coo-Na+ 3.soaps are not suitable for washing purpose when the water is hard 4. Soap are biodegradable 5. Soaps have relatively weak cleansing action Detergents: 1. Detergents are the sodium salts of long chain benzene sulphonic acid 2. The ionic group in detergent is -So3-Na+ 3. Detergents can be used for washing even when the water is hard 4.some of the detergents are not biodegradable 5. Dwtergents have a strong cleansing action.
