Answer: Waste refers to waste of all types of resources, but especially the material resources which constitute a significant portion. Wastages are seen in all walks of life, such as improper closing off water taps, use of wood and cow dung as fuel, unnecessary turning on lights and conspicuous left over at dining tables etc.

Up to about 10 to 15 percent grains in our country are eaten by birds, rats and other insects which can convert the deficit into surplus. Wastages can result in industry due to over specifications or under specifications.

The net result is the purchase of costlier than essential items in first case and a higher percentage of defectives thereby leading to a frequent replacement. Hence these goods/materials which are inevitably produced when materials are utilized or become obsolete must be disposed of efficiently.

In this way efficient reuse or redistribution of surplus, obsolete or waste materials has a significant bearing upon the profitability of organizations/enterprises. So to reduce waste, we have to maximize the utilization of resources. Waste Management and Resource Management are thus supportive to each other.
