The room not being electrified, the room being very small and shabby, his scanty collection of clothes and a very small amount of money in his suitcase are evidences to show that the narrator's earnings were meagre.

EXPLANATION:

In the story, ‘The Snake and the Mirror’, a homeopathic doctor narrates an incident of his life to the writer. From the description we can presume that ‘the doctor’ at that time was poor. He begins his tale by stating that his earnings were meagre as he had just started his practice.

He had rented a very small room and could not afford it to be electrified. He had very few clothes and one solitary black coat which was wearing away. His total savings were just sixty rupees which he kept in a suitcase. All these were the ‘evidences’ to show that the narrator's earnings were meagre.
