Sugarcane is indigenous to tropical South and Southeast Asia. Different species likely originated in different locations, with Saccharum barberi originating in India and S. edule and S. officinarum in New Guinea.
It is now highly probable that sugarcane evolved from a specific lineage restricted to current genus Saccharum and independent from lineages that conducted to genera Miscanthus and Erianthus.
Sources of sugar. Table sugar or sucrose is extracted from plant sources. The most important two sugar crops are sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) and sugar beets (Beta vulgaris), in which sugar can account for 12%–20% of the plant's dry weight.
