As we know that, 'Di' means two. So, a diatomic molecule is a molecule which is made up of two atoms. The diatomic molecules includes both homo and hetero forms of molecules.
Mono-diatomic Molecule:
When both the combining atoms in a molecule are of the same element, then diatomic molecule is said to be homo-diatomic molecule.
Examples:
Chlorine(Cl₂), Florine(Fl₂), Oxygen(O₂)
Hetero-diatomic Molecule:
When the combining atoms in a molecule are of two different elements, then the diatomic molecule is said to be hetero-diatomic molecule.
Examples:
Hydrogen chloride(HCl), Hydrogen bromide(HBr), Hydrogen iodide(HI)
