Answer:

An infinitive usually begins with the word “to” and is followed by the base form of a verb (the simple form of the verb that you would find in the dictionary). Examples of infinitives include to read, to run, to jump, to play, to sing, to laugh, to cry, to eat, and to go.

\small{\underline{\sf{\green{Examples-}}}}

1. Rama likes to play cricket.

[ to play what? Cricket ]

2. Rama likes to play daily.

[ to play when? Daily ]

Here, we notice that to play is formed from the verb play ; it is therefore like a verb in some respects : for example,

i) it may taken an object, and ii) it may be qualified by an adverb.

In sentence 1, to play , like a transitive verb , takes the object cricket.

In sentence 2, to play, like a verb, is qualified by the adverb daily.

Now, examine these sentences :-

1. To play is his great delight.

2. He likes to play cricket daily.

Here, to play is the name of an action, the action of playing. To play is therefore like a noun :for example, i) as in sentence 1, it may stand as the subject of a verb, or ii) as in sentence 2, it may stand as the object of a verb.

Here, we have seen that to play is like a verb, and in this article we see that it is also like a noun. To play is therefore a Verb-Noun.

In Grammer, a Verb -Noun, like to play, is called an Infinitive.
