To answer this question, lets take an Ice cube as the matter in question. Following are the changes in state it can go through.

Solid state of matter: Ice cube itself is in its solid state of structure.

Liquid state of matter: When heat is provided to an ice cube, it turns into water / liquid state of matter

Gaseous state of matter: Water when heated turns into vapor/gaseous state of matter.
