Examples to show that friction is a friend and a foe:

☘️ Friction is friend:

(i) Friction allows us to grip and catch different objects.

(ii) It helps us to walk comfortably on the surface.

(iii) It helps to minimize the speed or to stop the moving objects.

(iv) It helps us to write on paper or blackboard.

(v) The things do not move from their places if we do not want to move, due to friction.

☘️ Friction is foe:

(i) Friction causes wear and tear in objects.

(ii) It causes damage to the parts of machines.

(iii) The machines or tools regular maintenance due to which a lot of money is wasted.

(iv) It reduces the speed of moving objects so more force is required.

(v) It does not allow the free movement of objects.

Answer:

Friction is a necessary evil acting both as a friend and a foe.

Examples of friction as a friend:

  1. We are able to walk because of frictional forces between ground and our feet.
  2. We are able to write because of friction between ball point and the paper surface.
  3. nails and screws stick to the wall surfaces because of friction.
  4. Lighting a match stick is because of friction between match stick and the side surface of the match box.

Examples of friction as a foe:

  1. Wear and tear of soles of our shoes is due to friction.
  2. When a tyre deflates, it is difficult to move the vehicle because of increased friction between the tyre and the road surface.
  3. Machines get heated up and produce noise because of friction.
  4. Due to friction, machines and vehicles consume more fuel and increase maintenance cost.
