The area around the fort was completely cleared of gardens, pavilions and mosques. The British wanted a clear ground for security reasons. There were many reasons to be neglected the walled city:
1. The zinat-al-masjid was converted into a bakery.
2.In the 1870's the western walls of Shahjahanabad we're broken to establish the railway and to allow the city to expand beyond the walls.
3. The Delhi college was turned into a school and shut down in 1877.
