Carbon exists in the free state and the combined state.

☆ In the free state☆

Carbon occurs free in nature in the crystalline I.e. crystal form as seen in diamond and graphite and in the amorphous impure form as coal formed below the earth's crust.

☆In the combined state☆

Carbon occurs as carbon dioxide in the atmosphere (about 0.03% by volume).
It also occurs as hydrocarbons in natural gas and petroleum. In the solid state, it occurs in wood (as cellulose), in plants and animals as carbohydrates and in minerals e.g. limestone- CaCO3.
