(1) Social Cause - The practice of Sati was abolished and the conversion to Christianity was made easier as the Indians converting to Christians were given the provision of owning their ancestral property of Hindu Origin.

(2) Military Cause - Back then, it was considered that if a person crossed the sea, they would lose their culture, that's why the soldiers refused to fight overseas. They were severely punished for this, but the issue did not die down. Soon, the General Recruitment Act was enacted and it was stated that those who agreed to fight for the Company overseas, they will be enrolled in the Army.

(3) Immediate Cause - A rumour spread that the new Enfield Rifle was greased with the fat of cows and pigs. And, Cows are sacred for Hindus, and Pigs, are impious for Muslims. That's why, many of them left the Company's Army. Also, the seizure of Awadh enflamed the minds of people.

(4) Political Cause (Treatment to ruling families) - The royal family of Bahadur Shah Zafar was transferred from the Red Fort to another place in Delhi. The names of the empire were removed from the minted coins. It was announced that Zafar would be the last Mughal Ruler, and that, his later generation would be regarded as 'Prince'.
