EXPLANATION:

• The Rural Employment Generation Program (REGP) was initiated in the year 1995. The goal of this program was to generate 'self-employment opportunities' in small towns and rural areas. A target for creating 25 lakh new jobs was set aside for the program under the 25 year plan as well as identifying the economic and social groups that are most susceptible to paucity in India.
• However in the year 2008, the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Ministry had proposed to launch a new scheme known as titled “Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP)” by the integration of the “Rural Employment Generation Program (REGP) with the “Prime Minister's Rozgar Yojana (PMRY)”.
• Under this scheme, financial aid in the form of margin/subsidy money is provided for establishing units costing up to INR 25 lakhs with higher subsidy levels for smaller value projects and those taken up by recipients/beneficiaries who belonged to marginalised sections of society.
• The objectives of the new scheme PMEGP are: to generating continual and viable employment prospects in urban and rural areas within the nation, providing sustainable and continuous employment to traditional and prospective artisans, urban and unemployed youth in the nation by way of establishing micro enterprises, and to facilitate the participation of financial institutes for greater 'credit flow to micro sector'.
