WHAT IS PLASMA MEMBRANE?

Plasma membrane: The semipermeable barrier that surrounds the cytoplasm of a cell.

FUNCTIONS..

◆ The principal components of the plasma membrane are lipids ( phospholipids and cholesterol), proteins, and carbohydrates.

◆ The plasma membrane protects intracellular components from the extracellular environment.

◆ The plasma membrane mediates cellular processes by regulating the materials that enter and exit the cell.

WHAT IS CYTOPLASM ?

The cytoplasm is all of the material within a cell, enclosed by the cell membrane, except for the cell nucleus.

FUNCTIONS..

The cytoplasm functions to support and suspend organelles and cellular molecules.

Many cellular processes also occur in the cytoplasm, such as protein synthesis, the first stage of cellular respiration (known as glycolysis), mitosis, and meiosis.

The cytoplasm helps to move materials, such as hormones, around the cell and also dissolves cellular waste.
