General characters:-

  • Algae are usually aquatic, either marine or fresh water.

  • Plant body is thallus (without any differentiation into root, stem and leaves) which may be unicellular, colonial, filamentous, parenchymatous or pseudochymatous.

  • Algae are covered by mucilage.

  • Vascular or mechanical tissues are absent.

  • Nutrition is photosynthetic with photosynthetic pigments - chlorophyll a , carotenes and xanthophylls.

  • Embryo stage is absent.

  • Its life cycle varies. It may be haplontic, diplontic or haplodiplontic.

Reproduction:-

  • Vegetative and asexual modes of reproduction are abundant. Asexual spores are of two types, mitospores and meiospores.
