cross between two parents possessing a pair of contrasting characters is known as monohybrid cross. To carry out such a cross, each parent is chosen to be homozygous or true breeding for a given trait (locus).

When fertilization occurs between two true breeding parents which does differ by only the characteristic which is being studied, the process is called a monohybrid cross, and the resulting offspring are called monohybrids. Mendel postulated that each parent in the monohybrid cross does contributes to one of two paired unit factors to each offspring, and every possible combination of unit factors was equally likely.
