The Large Hadron Collider is the world's biggest and most powerful particle accelerator. It was built by the European Organization for Nuclear Research It is a giant circular tunnel built underground. The tunnel is 17 miles long, and between 50 and 175 meters below the ground. The aim of the LHC is to allow physicists to test the predictions of different theories of particle physics, including measuring the properties of the Higgs boson and searching for the large family of new particles predicted by supersymmetric theories, as well as other unsolved questions of physics
The total operating budget of the LHC runs to about $1 billion per year. The Large Hadron Collider was first turned on in August of 2008, then stopped for repairs in September until November 2009. Taking all of those costs into consideration, the total cost of finding the Higgs boson ran about $13.25 billion.
The Large Hadron Collider is nearly 30 years in the making - and costs the member countries of CERN and other participating countries an estimated €4.6 billion Like those late night infomercials, however, we can say "but that's not all!"
