In the story, Mr. Plummer is Captain Anthony's overseer. He is an unbelievably cruel man who drinks and a blasphemer. He carries around a whip and keeps lashing it out at the slaves. He derives an authoritative pleasure when he whips and tortures the slaves and they keep screaming for help.

One such incident that describes his cruelty is when he whips up Douglas's Aunt Hester. She would be beaten up till she bled and until he was tired. Douglas' would wake up to the shrieks of his aunt
