the IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) nomenclature (naming scheme) is used. This is to give consistency to the names. It also enables every compound to have a unique name, which is not possible with the common names used (for example in industry).

The parent chain contains 4 carbon atoms and one triple bond. it is named as butyne. The numbering is started from the end which gives the lowest number to the triple bond. Hence, the IUPAC name of the compound is 1-butyne.
