The main characteristics of Ganga river system are:-
1) The headwaters of the Ganga called the 'Bhagirathi' is fed by the Gangotri glacier and joined by the Alaknanda at Devprayag in Uttarakhand.
2) The Ganga emerges from the mountains on the plains at Haridwar.
3) The main Himalayas tributaries of Ganga are- the Yamuna,the Ghagra,the Kosi and the Gandak.
4) The main peninsular tributaries of Ganga are- the Chambal,the Betwa and the Son.
5) The Ganga flows eastwards till Farakka in West Bengal.
