When Gulliver went to the land of Balnibarbi he was received with kindness by lord Munodi who had been the governed of Lagado some years back. The academy at Lagado was conducted to research projects on Arts, Science and Mechanics in Balnibarbi. But lord Munodi told him that these projects were unsuccessful. As they were working constantly on useless experiments. For example, he met a man there who was trying to extract sunlight from cucumber. Other experiments were trying to turn excrement back into food, to make gunpowder from ice, trying to use spiders as weavers of silk etc. Some professors were also trying to change the communication of Balnibarbi. Gulliver then visited the part of academy that was for studies of politics. He found that people there were completely mad. They suggested such things that taxes should be imposed on the beauty and the wisdom. In the school for mathematics, the method of teaching maths was by writing the theory and proof on a think wafer with ink. The student would swallow it upon a fasting stomach. The mathematics teacher did not get any success in this project.
