Odissi dance costumeOdissi is the traditional dance of Orissa. Thecostume is similar to that of traditionalBharathanatyam costume. Light cottons in summerand light woolens in winter.. Odissi dance attire likeother Indian Classical dance has a stitchedcostume (pyjama style) made out of the specialOrissa handloom sarees. The sarees have theirspecial borders and intricate designs that sets themapart from other sarees. Earlier, there were no stitched costumes but only thesarees used to be draped around. But over a period of time, the stitchedcostume has been used more frequently because of its convenience.Orissa is recognized in India for its handlooms, especially the Orissa saris (sixyard material draped around as clothing for Indian women). The saris usuallyhave bright eye-catching color combinations, such as the ones you see displayedin the titles, banners and borders above, and different patterns, animals, etcrepeated over the length of the saris. The state is also known for the intricatesilver filigree jewellery. In Odissi dance, both the sari and jewellery areshowcased in the attire.Originally, the Orissa saris were draped around the dancers in a specific mannerfor the costume. However, due to time constraints and for greater ease andneatness, costumes are now stitched in that specific manner, so that the dancerscould easily change into different costumes during a program. In Orissa there aremany different designs and motifs woven in cotton and silk to create thedistinctive saris of Orissa - Bomkai, Teliarumaal, Sambalpuri which are cherishedby women in India.

The costume of the Odissi dancer is a silk saree draped in a practical and comfortable style. The wears the head ornament called the "Mathami", "Kapa" on the ears, "Kankana" on the wrists, armlets called "Bahichudi" or "Tayila" and an elaborate belt. She wears on her ankles bells strung together on a single cord. A "Padaka-tilaka", a necklace with a locket rests on the chest. An Odissi dancer has elaborate hair-do in a knot adorned with the "Tahiya" which represents a temple tower. Garlands of flowers are woven into the hair. Palms and soles are painted with a red liquid called the "Alta".
