Answer:

It is a small setup to detect whether the emitted gas is CO2 or not. If it is CO2 then the Lime Water will turn milky (since calcium carbonate is not soluble in water) but when excess of CO2 is passed it turns to a transparent solution again!

The reactions taking place in total:-

Ca(OH)2(aq) + CO2(g) → CaCO3(s) + H2O.

CaCO3(s) + H2O(l) + CO2(g) → Ca(HCO3)
