Answer:

x = number large dogs

x + 36 = number small dogs

x + (x + 36) = 49

2x + 36 = 49

2x = 13

x = 6.5 large dogs

x + 36 = 42.5 small dogs

Since I highly doubt we have any "half dogs" the numbers given in the problem are off.

If there were an even number of total dogs this would work. As it is, we have either

6 large, 43 small or 7 large, 42 small ...

Neither case actually gives 36 more small dogs and a total of 49

Total ==> 49 Signed up for the show.

Large ==> x

Small ==> x + 36

Large + Small = Total

x + ( x + 36 ) = 492x = 13 m

This means six and a half dogs

No wonder the answers all differ.

Please confirm that the question is valid.

The only solution I would consider would leave one dog without a home.

ie x = 6 plus one remainder.

1 homeless dog.

or, someone takes this last dog.

Is that permissible in this question?

Perhaps you would show us what we are missing.!

Sorry if the answer is wrong
